Story Builder: Games Workshop Programme

In partnership with Into Film, we have created and prototyped a unique gaming resource: the Story Builder: Games Booklet. This innovative programme offers schools the chance to access free literacy and game design workshops based on the Story Builder: Games and Story Builder: Games Lite resources.

These workshops support KS2 to KS3 pupils in creating their own game design ideas, developing characters, designing worlds, and deciding how their games will be played and won. The programme is designed to nurture creativity and literacy through hands-on, engaging activities, all while building key game design skills.

"Story Builder: Games is an invaluable resource that enhances young people's idea development and literacy skills in a fun and creative way. We look forward to seeing their game ideas come together and maybe even spot some future BAFTA Young Game Designers."

- Lisa Prime, Head of Children & Young People's Programme at BAFTA.

What's Involved in the Workshops?

  • Hands-on Game Design: Pupils will explore how games are designed, focusing on genres, characters, and worlds while learning about the structure of a game narrative.

  • Curriculum Integration: The Story Builder: Games Booklet is a no-tech programme packed with activities that can be applied to any curricular topic. Imagine designing a game around the Victorians, the water cycle, or any subject your class is learning about!

  • Storytelling for Games: Learners will create characters, settings, stories, and more—all based on their research and understanding of the subject.

  • Support for Literacy Skills: The programme helps to enhance literacy through writing and storytelling, offering a fun way to develop narrative skills.

Who Can Join?

The programme is open to KS2 to KS3 pupils, with workshops for 30 students per session. These can be delivered during the school day or after-school, with an option for back-to-back workshops to accommodate up to 60 pupils a day. The workshops run for 3-5 weeks with an optional extra week to create a game prototype.

What’s Provided?

  • Story Builder: Games Lite Workbooks: Provided by Into Film for each pupil to work through during the workshops.

  • Facilitation by Kippie: Experienced facilitators from Kippie will lead the workshops, guiding pupils through the game design process and helping bring their ideas to life.

  • Curricular Flexibility: Story Builder: Games can be adapted to fit into any topic you are teaching, enhancing cross-curricular literacy and creativity.
