GOOD RELATIONS GAME
Made with the young people from The Cathedral Youth Club, The Fountain and thanks to Jeandre. We asked these young people to help us design and make a game that looked at prejudice and how to tackle it. We decided to focus on the problems some eastern european kids face when they move here, and what we can do to help.
Together we came up with this. Hope you like it.

The Void Gallery and The Playtrail
Having worked with both Void and the students of The Playtrail previously for the ‘This is Me!’ project in 2019, we knew that we wanted this project to showcase these young people’s incredible imagination, sense of humour and creativity, and to share it with the wider world.
At Kippie, we love games, and we think playing games with your family and friends has to be one of the best ways to spend your time. We also love stories and storytelling! The best computer games we have played all had great stories, even if it is just Mario rescuing the princess AGAIN. But sometimes our imaginations need a little help to get going - and this is where Make it up! comes in. The students at The Playtrail can lend you some of their imagination to get you started.
All the cards come straight from the minds of the students, who have hand drawn each one. These unique works of art are overflowing with charm, fun and personality, and we hope you like them!
I enjoyed sharing my ideas and seeing them come to life!!!

The Playtrail
Before the summer, our group of talented young people worked with Kippie to create an exciting new game called 'Make it up'. Creating this game has helped the group as a whole to think way outside the box! Being creative is so important for this group as it allows them to explore more of their own potential through their imagination. The cards make the impossible, possible in the world of creative storytelling and have enabled our young people to utilise their teamwork skills and become fantastic story-tellers in their own right.
Erica Curran - Leader
The Playtrail
I liked designing the cards and making them colourful. Colouring in is my favourite thing to do!

The Playtrail
Having worked in collaboration with Kippie and The Playtrail pre-pandemic, we were delighted to be collaborating with them once again over the last couple of months. The purpose of these workshops were to further enable the participants to feel more confident in their ability to create, to challenge them to express and discover their amazing imaginations and to further showcase these to the public. We are amazed by the outcome of these workshops and the talent of the participants! We hope to continue this relationship between Void, Kippie and the young people of The Playtrail and look forward to working together again in 2023.’

St Brigid’s College - Autism Specific Centre
We had the privilege of working with a group of young men on the autism spectrum from St Brigid’s College to create Game On—a cross-genre, post-apocalyptic 2D adventure.
When we first met the students, we suggested making a game about their shared experiences of being on the autism spectrum. The idea was met with little enthusiasm. Their fantastic teacher explained that this time—spent outside the school environment at a nearby youth club—was a break from thinking about autism or feeling ‘different’ from their peers.
So, we asked: What would you like to make a game about?
Their answer?
A nuclear apocalypse.
Mutants.
And so, Game On was born.
The students worked collaboratively on character designs and graphics, using a mix of paper sketches, physical models, and GameMaker’s pixel-based sprite editor. Our artist helped bring their ideas to life. They split into teams to develop individual levels, planning them through sketches and rapid paper prototyping.
Along the way, they learned about object-based programming, using GameMaker’s drag-and-drop system to lay out and test their levels. Many of the final game’s programmed elements were created by the students themselves. They also took charge of the game’s sound design, recording the vast majority of effects from scratch.
Through Game On, these students not only built a game but also developed new skills, collaborated creatively, and proved that gaming can be a powerful tool for self-expression—on their own terms.
The Liberty Consortium, The Hub and The Void Gallery
This video was part of a collaborative project with The Liberty Consortium’s Hub students and Void Gallery, centered around the theme This is Me. The project provided young people with the opportunity to explore and express themselves through various art forms, including clay, paint, and digital technology.
By being both the artists and the subjects of this exhibition, these students affirmed their right to creative freedom and self-expression. Their self-portraits—crafted through a variety of mediums and techniques—offer a powerful glimpse into their individuality and perspectives.
For us, getting to know these young people was a privilege. We were truly inspired by their honesty, enthusiasm, and joy in the creative process. The quality of their work speaks for itself, each portrait capturing something unique about its creator.
A huge thank you to Erica Curran and all at The Liberty Consortium, Louise Boyce at Derry City & Strabane District Council, Maeve and the team at Void, and the Acorn Fund for their generous support in making this project possible.
